Mary Anne Chambers
Mary Anne Chambers was born in Jamaica and emigrated to Canada in 1976. She is a graduate of The Immaculate Conception High School. She has spent a life in banking, politics, and education with consistent dedication to giving back to communities through service.
She joined Scotiabank in 1976 and was involved in the expansion of computer and electronic services within the organization in Canada and beyond. She was also involved in numerous taskforces concerning the role of women in the workplace. In 1988, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto with a major in Commerce. She has also received four honorary doctorates from the University of Guelph, The University of Toronto, York University and Lakehead University.
Mary Anne was named the Chancellor of the University of Guelph in April 2022. She retired from Scotia Bank as a Senior Vice-President in 2002. She is also a former director of Grace, Kennedy (Ontario) Ltd. and Grace Foods International Ltd.
Mary Anne was a member of the Board of Governors at the University of Toronto from 1993 to 2001, and Vice-Chair of the Governing Council from 1998 to 2001. She helped to author a University policy that no student would be prevented from studying at Toronto for inadequate financial resources.
In 2003, she was awarded the Jamaican Prime Minister of Jamaica’s Medal of Appreciation for Service to Jamaica for Service to Jamaica in recognition of her work within Toronto’s Jamaican community. She has also been a recipient of the Order of Ontario, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals, a University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor’s Award and a YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction Award.
