It’s World Book and Copyright Day. So let’s ta It’s World Book and Copyright Day. So let’s talk about reading. There can be so much pressure about what to read. But ultimately, the only thing that matters is what you want to read. Whether you are into mind bending literary feast like or you just love a good romance or a combination of the two. If poetry is what your heart craves or you just want a good graphic novel, read what thrills you, what keeps you coming back to the page.

And for those moments when you lose your reading mojo, don’t stress. If this book isn’t working for you, put it down, try another ... maybe you’ll come back to it, maybe you won’t. Either way, book don’t judge.

What books do you love to read?
Is there a book you come back to over and again?
What book has soothed your soul or set you on fire?

It must have been providential that the verdict co It must have been providential that the verdict convicting Derek Chauvin came back on 4/20. A huge part of Peter Tosh’s label as contentious is related to his insistence on the philosophy that equal rights and justice go hand in hand. That if you do not have these, any attempt at love and unity will be fragile and unsustainable.
.
As the protests erupted last year, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, it was a collective call for justice, so elusive despite the years of struggle toward equality. And this verdict whispers that injustice is not inevitable, even in the wake of the news that one of the officers who murdered Breonna Taylor got a book deal and knowing that this was in part possible because, as he was not convicted of a crime he is free to go ahead and profit from it.
.
I write this knowing full well my place as a Jamaican, giving me the uncomfortable seemingly paradoxical seat of being in a country that is majority black, but justice still so often ill under us. I write this knowing full well that most times I feel impotent to change this. But I also write this knowing full well this is what brought me to publishing. One of the greatest injustices against black people have been the erasure and distortion of our stories. And this is why I write, more importantly, this is why I keep publishing - despite the often daunting hurdles - because our story is not just one story, it is not just tales of suffering and strife, and there is so much left to tell. And even while we keep moving forward with those stores, we can take a moment and breathe in this moment.

PS - I can’t wait to read the poems that will capture the catharsis of this moment.

“Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow, “Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.” Khalil Gibran
